1.1 Why you are here

You are almost certainly taking this course for one of three reasons.

A court gave you the option to dismiss a traffic citation. Your insurance company offers a discount for completing an approved driving safety course. Or you decided on your own that six hours was worth spending. The State of Texas recognises all three — the certificate you receive at the end carries a field marked Traffic Citation, Insurance Discount, or Other, and the course is identical for each.

If you are here for a citation. Texas law allows a court, at its discretion, to dismiss certain traffic charges when a driver completes an approved driving safety course. Eligibility is limited — generally to once in a twelve-month period, and not for every offence — and the decision belongs to the court, not to us and not to you. Your job is to complete the course and deliver the certificate by the date the court set. Miss that date and the option usually closes.

If you are here for insurance. Many Texas insurers reduce premiums for drivers who complete an approved course, often for a period of years. The size of the discount and the rules around it are set by your insurer, not by the state. Ask them before you assume.

And the reason underneath both. In 2025, 3,769 people died on Texas roads. Not one day of that year passed without a traffic death somewhere in the state. Whatever brought you here, you are about to spend six hours on the single most dangerous thing most adults do routinely.

We are not going to pretend this is entertainment. It is a six-hour course about a serious subject, and we have tried to make it clear, current, and worth your attention rather than merely short.

1.2 How this course works

This is an online course. You may take it on a phone, tablet, or computer, and you do not need to finish in one sitting — your progress is saved, and you can stop and return as often as you like.

Six hours means six hours. Texas requires at least 300 minutes of instruction plus 60 minutes of break time, and requires us to prove you were present for it. A timer runs on each unit and releases the Continue control only when that unit's minimum time has passed. Reading ahead will not speed it up. Neither will leaving the page open while you do something else — the course watches for that too.

The order is fixed. Thirteen units, taken in sequence, identical for every student in Texas. The state approves the order in advance and we cannot vary it.

You will be asked questions along the way. Short questions inside units to confirm you are present and paying attention; a quiz at the end of each unit; and a comprehensive examination at the end.

1.3 What you must do to receive credit

To earn your certificate you must:

  1. Complete all thirteen units, in order, meeting the minimum time in each
  2. Score 70% or better on each unit quiz
  3. Score 70% or better on the final examination
  4. Correctly answer the identity questions asked during the course
  5. Provide accurate identifying information — your name, date of birth, and driver licence number

are printed on the certificate and reported to the state

Your name and driver licence number must match your licence exactly. A certificate with the wrong name or number may be rejected by the court, and correcting one after issue takes time you may not have. Check them now.

When you finish, we issue your certificate and report the completion data to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

1.4 What the State of Texas requires this course to cover

This course is a six-hour driving safety course licensed and regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). It is delivered by Kubosh Defensive Driving, provider CP1172, and its content follows TDLR's Course of Organized Instruction for Driving Safety.

TDLR requires every Texas driving safety course to cover the same twelve subjects:

  1. The traffic safety problem
  2. Factors influencing driver performance
  3. Perceptual skills needed for driving
  4. Physical forces that influence driver control
  5. Traffic laws and procedures
  6. Special skills for difficult driving environments
  7. Defensive driving strategies
  8. Driving emergencies
  9. Occupant restraints and protective equipment
  10. Alcohol and traffic safety
  11. Human trafficking
  12. A comprehensive examination

Every course in Texas covers these. What differs is how carefully.

Questions about the course itself come to us. Questions about TDLR's rules can go to the Department's Education and Examination Division at (800) 803-9202 or tdlr.texas.gov.

VIDEO 1.1 — "How this course works" (PRODUCED, ~2:00)

Purpose: Orientation for COI 4.2.1(B). The single largest support-ticket generator in online driving safety is students not understanding why they cannot advance; two minutes here removes calls later. Placed at §1.2. Under 180 s → no §84.505(e)(2) question bank required. Format: Screen-recorded walkthrough of the ACTUAL Kubosh platform interface — no location shoot, no actors. Capture 1080p desktop and mobile; brand cursor highlight; calm VO; navy/white lower-thirds; logo end card.

WHAT TO SHOOT / CAPTURE (shot list)

  • S1. Course home / unit list — 13 units in order, progress indicator.
  • S2. A unit page with the seat-time TIMER visible and the Continue button DISABLED (greyed).
  • S3. Timer reaching zero and Continue UNLOCKING (color change).
  • S4. A validation ("are you there?") question appearing mid-unit; student answers.
  • S5. A unit quiz; a submitted score ≥ 70%.
  • S6. Closing the browser, then returning to the SAME spot — progress saved.
  • S7. The same flow on a phone (mobile-friendly).

Production direction / notes

  • Record against the FINAL production UI. If the UI changes before launch, re-shoot the affected

screens — this video must match what the student actually sees.

  • No student PII on screen; use a demo account with a placeholder name and a fake DL number.
  • Keep VO calm and administrative, not "salesy" — this video's only job is to prevent confusion.
  • Under 180 s by design, so no post-video question bank (§84.505(e)(2) applies only above 180 s).

Compliance notes

  • Not a scored topic. No mastery bank required (§84.505(e)(3)(A) applies to Topics 2–12).
  • §1.3 must be reviewed against the final platform behaviour before submission — it describes the

actual mechanism and must not overstate it.

  • ⚠ §1.1 deliberately avoids asserting what a court "requires". Confirm the eligibility language

against Tex. Code Crim. Proc. arts. 45A.351–45A.359 with counsel before publication. Do not cite art. 45.0511 — repealed 1 Jan 2025.

  • Statistics: 3,769 deaths and the zero-death-free-days fact — TxDOT CRIS 2025, see

../01-texas-statistics-reference.md.
